Restaurants with live entertainment in Madrid: where to dine with music, DJs and shows

A restaurant with atmosphere in Madrid is one where the music, the lighting and the crowd matter as much as the menu: live jazz, a DJ, performances or a room that becomes a dance floor. Panthera, in Chamberí, falls into that last group: Nikkei, Mediterranean and Latin cooking from 20:00, and a club with a DJ from midnight.

«Atmosphere» means different things to different people. For some it is a loud bar; for others, candles and soft music. Here we mean it the way people do when they want more than just dinner: a place with energy, where the night moves on without you having to leave the table. Madrid offers several ways to get that, and it helps to know which one you are after before booking, because a jazz trio and a midnight DJ are very different evenings.

Four kinds of restaurant with atmosphere

One important nuance: the atmosphere changes with the clock. The same place can be calm at 20:30 and something else entirely by 23:30. If you want a relaxed dinner with the party arriving later, book early; if you would rather walk straight into the lively part, book later. At Panthera dinner starts at 20:00 (20:30 on Sundays) and the switch to club mode comes at 00:00, so a table at 21:30 or 22:00 puts you right at the turning point.

Panthera: a dinner that ends on the dance floor

Panthera calls itself a Dinner and Dance restaurant. The decor is all black panthers and low light, with a tropical jungle look and 1980s glamour that includes panther sculptures and Grace Jones imagery, as Hostelpro described it. The crowd is very international. There are live DJs and shows during dinner, and at 00:00 the room becomes a club, with a resident DJ and reactive lighting.

The practical upside of this format is that you do not need to plan a second venue. At midnight the tables become private celebration areas (we explain it in what the Bottle Club is) and the night carries on until 02:30, 03:00 or 03:30, depending on the day. Each one has its own idea of atmosphere, and that is the beauty of Madrid: you can choose the place to fit the plan, rather than the other way round.

• If you want to talk over dinner, look for live music at conversation volume.
• If it is a celebration, a place with a DJ and performances offers more than a quiet dining room.
• If you want to dance without taking a taxi, dinner and dance is your format: eat, then stay.
